What To Expect

An Ubud Itinerary Without a Scooter: How to Make It Work

Not everyone in Ubud rides a scooter, and not everyone should. The assumption that you need one is widespread but not quite true, particularly if you’re based in or near the center. A well-planned Ubud itinerary without scooter gets you to more than most people expect, on foot, by bicycle, or by occasional driver, without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads in Bali traffic.

Here’s how to structure it practically.

Base Yourself Centrally

This is the single most important decision in an Ubud itinerary without scooter. Staying in or very close to central Ubud puts the majority of the town’s most worthwhile experiences within walking distance. The Monkey Forest, Ubud Palace and Art Market, Yoga Barn, the main warung strip, and numerous walking trails all sit within a 15 to 20 minute walk of the central area.

Pengosekan, just south of center, is a particularly good base. It is residential enough to feel calm but close enough to everything that walking remains practical throughout the day.

Morning: Walk the Campuhan Ridge

Leave your accommodation by 7am and walk to the Campuhan Ridge trailhead, around 20 to 30 minutes on foot from central Ubud depending on where you’re staying. The ridge walk itself takes 40 to 50 minutes at a comfortable pace and returns you to the road near a cluster of cafes good for breakfast.

This morning requires no transport at all and gives you one of the better things Ubud offers before the day has properly started.

Mid-Morning: The Market and Palace Area

Walk the main Jalan Raya Ubud toward the Art Market and Ubud Palace. The market is best browsed without the intention to buy anything, which makes the experience more enjoyable. The palace exterior and the Pura Taman Saraswati temple beside it are both worth time and both are free to view from the outside.

A coffee somewhere along this stretch, taken slowly, does the job of easing into the rest of the day.

Afternoon: Hire a Driver for One Long Trip

The practical reality of an Ubud itinerary without scooter is that some of the surrounding area genuinely requires transport. Tegallalang rice terraces, Tirta Empul temple, and Goa Gajah are all too far to walk but easily reached by car.

Book a driver for a half-day in the afternoon: most hotels including Rama Phala Resort & Spa can arrange this, and the cost split between two or three people is reasonable. Combine two or three nearby sites in a single loop and return by late afternoon.

Evening: Walk to Dinner and a Performance

Central Ubud’s evening offerings are entirely walkable. Kecak and Legong performances happen at venues near the palace most evenings, tickets sold at the gate. Dinner before or after is a five minute walk in any direction.

Getting Around Day to Day

Bicycles are available for rent from most central accommodations and cover a lot of ground without the risk of a scooter. Walking, particularly in the early morning and evening, is genuinely pleasant and often faster than a scooter through congested areas. Apps like Grab work in Ubud for occasional trips where walking isn’t practical.

Staying at Rama Phala Resort & Spa in Pengosekan means bike rental is available on-site and the central Ubud walks described here begin from the property. For travelers planning an Ubud itinerary without scooter, that kind of practical base makes the whole approach considerably easier to sustain.
